On Sunday, Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich won the Chicago Marathon 2022 by crossing the line in 2hr 14min 18sec, and she was just 14 seconds behind the world record.
By the halfway point, Ruth built up an early lead and had established an astonishing 3min 42sec advantage over the chasing pack. Previously, in 2019, Ruth’s compatriot Brigid Kosgei set a world record by crossing the line at 2:14:04, and in this race, Ruth was just 14 seconds behind this record.
After winning the race, Ruth said I wanted to break the world record, but I am happy, and next year I am ready to come back again.
American Emily Sisson finished second by crossing the line at 2:18:29, while Kenyan Vivian Jerono Kiplagat finished third by crossing the line at 2:20:52.
In the men’s race, Kenyan Benson Kipruto won by crossing the line at 2:04:24, and it was the second Kenyan title in the Chicago Marathon 2022. Ethiopian Seifu Tura finished second by crossing the line at 2:04:49, while Kenyan John Korir finished third by crossing the line at 2:05:01.
After winning the race, Kipruto said I am so happy, and I am here to take up from where Chumba left off.
In the men’s wheelchair race, Sweedish Marcel Hug won by crossing the line at 1:25:20, Daniel Romanchuk finished second by crossing the line at 1:33:11, and Aaron Pike finished third by crossing the line at 1:33:13.
In the women’s wheelchair race, Susannah Scaroni won by crossing the line at 1:45:48, Tatyana McFadden finished second by crossing the line at 1:49:46, and Jenna Fesemyer finished third by crossing the line at 1:49:52.
